Disability Law Program
The Disability Law Program was established in 1987 in response to the recognition within the disability community of the need for legal advocacy to redress discrimination and promote the rights of persons with disabilities. It provides legal advocacy to further the equality rights of such individuals through the courts and administrative tribunals.
The program consists of a blend of test cases, services cases, law reform, and legal education and support to the community.
The community support and law reform activities are primarily carried out by working with members of disability organizations and other equality seeking groups. In particular, CLAS’s Disability Advisory Committee, comprised of self-advocates, community advocates, community groups, and representatives of the CLAS Board and staff, to discuss strategies for addressing legal issues facing people with disabilities.
CLAS also provides workshops for various disability groups and their representatives throughout the province relating to disability law issues.
