Inclusive Playground

Povnet > Kaien Island Community Networking Society > Inclusive Playground

The Kaien Island Community networking Society has been striving to realize a long time goal. That goal is to have a playground that all children can use regardless of ability or disability. That means the child who is in a wheelchair would be able to use the equipment like his abled bodied friends instead of being on the sidelines and feeling left out.

At this time Prince Rupert does not have a playground which is accessible for children of different abilities.
Children of all abilities learn by doing and play is a fundamental joy of childhood. It is also an important way children learn to navigate the world. Children, regardless of ability or disability, need outdoor play environment to build their strengths, instil a sense of self-empowerment, enjoy the sun and experience a natural setting. One child in ten in north America has some type of disability. In most communities children with disabilities sit on the sidelines, if they come at all, while their peers play in traditional playgrounds. For example children who use wheelchairs or other means of physical support usually must abandon their special equipment and be carried or crawl. For them a playground can be a very humiliating place.
Accessible community playgrounds benefit both typically able children and children with disabilities while providing opportunities for children with a variety of abilities to play together.
Our goal is to provide a community playground which is fun, enriching and developing appropriate for typically able children and children with physical, sensory and developmental disabilities.

Right now we have raised $18,000.00 out of the $60,000.00 needed to complete this very important community project.
