Mental Health Law Program (MHLP)
Since 1977 the Mental Health Law Program has provided legal services to persons with a mental disorder in British Columbia. The program provides the following services:
We provide representation to persons found not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder or unfit to stand trial pursuant to the Criminal Code (Mental Disorder Provisions) in front of the BC Review Board. Our lawyers also pursue mental health law test cases and Charter cases as time permits.
We provide representation to persons who have been detained under the British Columbia Mental Health Act in front of the BC Review Panel throughout the Province.
We provide independent legal information on detention issues to persons who have been detained under the Mental Health Act at Riverview Hospital and the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital.
