Volunteer Resources
The heart of a volunteer is not measured in size, but by the depth of the commitment to make a difference in the lives of others. -- DeAnn Hollis
The Nanaimo Brain Injury Program offers opportunities for individuals to volunteer their time and talents to our organization. Volunteers are an important and valued resource for delivering the programs and services of NBIS. They participate by supporting fundraising efforts at bingo events, facilitating support groups, becoming board members, providing reception and clerical support and promoting the Society at community events.

In September 2005, NBIS is planning to implement an exciting new Volunteer Program that will increase volunteer recruitment, training and recognition efforts. NBIS will focus on providing individuals with an acquired brain injury volunteer placements that will increase compensatory skills and promote inclusion in the community. There will be opportunities for individuals to volunteer within our organization and with partnering agencies and businesses. Our new Volunteer Program will significantly increase the current volunteer numbers and hours of service.

Telephone Outreach Peer Support (TOPS) is a telephone outreach service that extends friendship, information and resources to survivors and caregivers impacted by an acquired brain injury. Local and toll free telephone service is available to participants in the Nanaimo, Duncan, Parksville, Qualicum Beach and outlying areas. This service provides a vital link in reaching out to individuals who experience the transportation, financial, health and geographic barriers to accessing programs and services. TOPS also provides an opportunity for individuals impacted by an acquired brain injury to volunteer in a meaningful way.
The program provides:
- Volunteers with 18 hours of training
- Empathy and understanding from volunteers who understand the impact of an acquired brain injury on daily living
- Designated times for participants to contact volunteers
- Outreach calls to reduce isolation and develop friendship
- Information and resources related to Acquired Brain Injury and coping strategies for survivors and caregivers
- Referrals to appropriate community supports
- Distribution of educational material
